Died 29th July 2014

Eleanor Whitelaw (85) was attacked and seriously injured in her home in the Morningside area of Edinburgh, Scotland, on Friday 11th July 2014. She was taken to hospital, but subsequently died on 29th Jul 2014.

Police Scotland said the incident is now being treated as murder.

Robert Buczek (23) was previously charged, on 28th July, with attempted murder and assault to severe injury and danger of life. At the time, he made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.

Ms Whitelaw was married and the mother to Professor Bruce Whitelaw of the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh.

Janet McLean, a neighbour, told BBC Scotland: “She was a very nice lady. She was very polite, jolly, she spoke to everybody. She was really very nice. You did see her and occasionally with her husband, they would go out together, but most times she would be by herself. She always spoke to people on the bus. I feel very sad about it.”

Professor Whitelaw is deputy director and head of division of developmental biology at Edinburgh University’s Easter Bush campus.

Buczek appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court before Sheriff Isabella McColl.
